Do You Know the Top 10 Issues That Cause Water Damage?

Water Damage is a severe issue that can end up costing you thousands of dollars. Some damage is covered by homeowners insurance, but if the damage could have been avoided your insurance company will not cover it. Knowing the causes of water damage before it happens could help you and your family prevent this disaster from damaging your home. Here are the top 10 issues that cause water damage:

Blocked Floor Drains

Usually present in the basement, floor drains help make sure that even if there is a leak, the water will drain out and away from your home. Make sure this area is clear of debris for quick draining.

HVAC Condensate Line

This line takes the moisture from your HVAC unit and pulls it out and down a drain. While this leak can be slow, many people don’t realize the risk that it can hold. Make sure your HVAC condensate line is free of blockages or cracks for clear drainage.

Foundation Cracks

Groundwater and runoff can seep into your home’s interior through the cracks in your foundation walls. Monitor small cracks and make sure they aren’t expanding. If you notice a change you may want to contact a professional to assess the damage.

Refrigerator Water Line

Having filtered water and on-demand ice out of your refrigerator and freezer may be a modern amenity we take for granted, but these water lines pose a big risk for water damage. Make sure there isn’t any standing water or puddles in or around your refrigerator.

Sink Leaks

The plumbing around your sink is also susceptible to leaks. Make sure you don’t hear any drips or see any standing water around or under your sink in your bathrooms or kitchens. Also beware of sink overflows, as they are another common cause of water damage in homes.

Toilet Water Line

Always check to make sure there are no wet spots or puddles around the toilet water line in your bathrooms. You should also look to see how your on/off value is looking to be sure it is free of corrosion. Similar to sinks - beware of overflows!

Washing Machines

Is the water from your drain hose going into your utility sink? If so, always make sure it is securely attached to avoid spills!

Sump Pumps

Sump pump failure can cause catastrophic water damage in your home and basement. It is important to make sure your sump pump always has a reliable source of power that won’t be bumped or disrupted.

Dishwasher Water Line

Similar to your refrigerator and toilet water lines, a small kink or tear in your dishwasher’s water line can result in a big mess. Check this often to see if you can spot any moisture or puddles forming.

Pipe Leaks

A leaky pipe can be a sneaky issue that causes water damage that you may not be able to see. Look for water buildup in obvious places, and in some instances a leaky pipe might be in your walls. Look closely for signs of water damage along baseboards or drywall to see if there might be a bigger problem going on behind your walls.
